The New York City chapter of the Institute for International Film Financing (IIFF) continues its popular monthly gatherings at the junction of film & finance with a special Film Financing Townhall at the renowned School of Visual Arts (SVA). Their facilities are conveniently located near the corner of 23rd Street & 3rd Avenue.

This grassroots community get-together is designed to foster & inform productive relationships between attendees. It provides unbiased insight & education about the business of film and film financing in particular. The event features a powerful roster of highly topical speakers from the filmmaking and financial industries. We are delighted to welcome real-world financiers among our guests!

The evening's five presentations plus panel discussion address key issues relevant to filmmakers, financiers and anyone interested in the economics, business mechanics, and financial dynamics of motion pictures. They are followed by Q&A time. Attendees also have ample opportunity to interact & network with our featured experts and amongst themselves.

An informal après-meeting celebration will take place at a nearby restaurant.

Host logoThis month's Film Financing Townhall in New York is hosted by the prestigious School of Visual Arts (SVA), one of the nation's largest independent, regionally accredited art and film schools. Located in the heart of New York City, SVA is an established leader and innovator in the education of artists, offering graduate, undergraduate and continuing-education classes.

From its inception in 1947 as a trade school with three instructors and 35 students, SVA has grown into a dynamic, multidisciplinary institution with a faculty of more than 800 and a student body of almost 3,500. Risa Crandall

She worked with Scholastic for five yeas, developing a large scale integrated marketing concept for clients. During her Scholastic tenure, Risa increased revenue by 400% and brought a media division from an unprofitable position to over $8M in profit. And while at Scholastic Risa was named "Integrated Marketer of the Year" by Marketing Information Network, and her marketing achievements were recognized on the Adweek hotlist. At Conde Nast Risa established the integrated selling strategy for the Conde Nast Bridal Group. She developed the platform and structure to successfully integrate digital, television, print, events and local marketing, resulting in over $6M in incremental revenue to the division. Bob Alexander

Speaker headshot 2Bob Alexander is the President and Co-Founder, with Barnet Liberman and Sally Plourde, of the Independent Film Development Group, LLC, the entity that owns the "IndiePix" registered mark. With his colleagues, he organized the company in the summer of 2004 and they turned on the switch to the website IndiePixFilms.com in January of 2005. Today, IFDG owns and operates several businesses under the "IndiePix" brand including the consumer facing website IndiePix Films.com; the filmmaker reporting and production business IndiePixStudios.com; and the wholly owned subsidiary IndiePixUnlimited.com, offering subscription based streaming of independent films. During the last 6 years, Bob was the Executive Producer on "Entre Nos," the award winning film from Paola Mendoza and Gloria LaMorte; on "P-Star Rising," focusing on Priscilla Diaz, the young woman hip-hop entertainer and lead actress on the "Electric Company;" and on other projects. He has led the substantial distribution campaigns for "End of America," featuring Naomi Wolf, produced by Avram Ludwig; for "Women Without Men," the Venice Silver Lion award winning film from globally renowned visual artist Shirin Neshat; and "Samson & Delilah," the Cannes Camera d'Or film from Warwick Thornton. Mikael Södersten

Speaker headshot 3Mikael Södersten has spent over twenty years in the Nordic film industry, consulting to Scandinavia's leading producers, directors, film associations and TV stations. As Co-Founder of Wilderness Films, he develops and produces original projects and facilitates co-productions between American and Scandinavian partners. On the content side, he has worked as a Script Doctor or Story Editor on over thirty Nordic features and three Swedish TV series, including an upcoming dramatic mini-series on the life of Ingmar Bergman, to be directed by Oscar winner Susanne Bier. He worked closely with internationally acclaimed directors Tomas Alfredson ("Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy") and Tomas Vinterberg ("Celebration"), bestselling author Henning Mankell ("Wallander" series) and actor Mikael Nyqvist ("Millennium Trilogy"). Projects he has developed include winners at Tribeca ("Let the Right One In") and Sundance ("King of Ping Pong"). As Chair of the Gothenburg Film Festival's Swedish Film Day for three years, he programmed over a hundred Swedish shorts and features. He has also been on the board of The Swedish Independent Filmmakers Association and co-organized the Dream Factory, the Swedish Film Institute's annual industry-wide conference. Mikael is currently co-producing an English-language feature with Swedish and Danish partners. As a director, he has made docs, shorts and films for Swedish TV. Stefan Schaefer

His films have premiered and won awards at festivals such as Berlin, Rotterdam, AFI and South by Southwest, among many others, and have been successfully released theatrically, via cable outfits such as HBO and the Sundance Channel, and on DVD. Kaiser Wahab

Speaker headshot 10Kaiser Wahab is a seasoned business, intellectual property, technology and entertainment lawyer with the Manhattan firm of Wahab & Medenica LLC, whose attorneys are hands-on business people and counselors. A graduate of Cornell University and Columbia Law School, he routinely assists film producers and entrepreneurs in crafting investment structures. He is also an Adjunct Professor at Columbia University School of the Arts, instructing students in venture financing and private offerings of securities for feature film vehicles. Kaiser's client list has included Das Films ("Veronika Decides to Die" with Sarah Michelle Gellar), Yash Raj Films, Anywhere Road Entertainment (as Executive Vice President), Andrew Paquin and his movie "Open House" featuring Oscar winner Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer, Faulkner Award winning author Phillip Jennings, and others. Kaiser has broad experience, having worked on films that run the gamut from Bollywood productions such as "Ta Ra Rum Pum" with Rani Mukerji and Saif Ali Khan, to indie comedies such as "The Oh in Ohio" starring Parker Posey, Paul Rudd and Danny DeVito. With Anywhere Road, he was intimately involved in the clearance, financing and distribution of all the company's films, including the Sundance Grand Jury Prize nominated documentary "A Very British Gangster" and "Black Irish" (Michael Angarano, Brendan Gleeson) by Brad Gann, writer of "Invincible." He also developed the financing and business model for Imagine Fashion's video collective, which features top fashion photography and modeling names. Beginning his career with Pryor Cashman LLP, Kaiser later joined Day Pitney LLP, where he handled licensing, trademark/copyright and contractual issues for companies like Microsoft and UTC. In addition to that, he clerked at the US Court of International Trade. Kaiser is published in the Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Journal, and he has lectured and presented at Harvard Law School, Columbia University and the School of Visual Arts on film financing, copyright and digital media. He has also served as Chair of the Corporations Law Committee at the New York County Lawyers Association.
